FASHION INSIDER: Anya Sarre

This month's Fashion Insider isn't a new face to CollegeFashionista. She has been featured in our Industry Interview Exclusive Video and moderated our Twitter #FashionTalk, sharing her knowledgeable styling tips with our followers. Her list of jobs is endless from TV host to celebrity stylist to Shoe Dazzle fashion expert to event planner and the list goes on and on. I couldn't be more excited to share an imitate Q&A with the great Anya Sarre. Be sure to follow her on Twitter @StylistAnya, like her on Facebook and check out her website for up-to-date happenings with this industry influencer.

CollegeFashionista: What was your first job in the fashion industry?

Anya Sarre: It wasn’t a paying job, but in college I started designing dresses with matching purses. Everyone in my sorority would come to my room to come get dressed for events and mixers. It felt like it was my duty to make sure everyone looked her best for every occasion!

CF: What is a typical day like for you?

AS: That’s what I love about what I do because each day is different! One day I can wake up and go in to hair and make up at 5:30AM and get to interview Chrisitian Louboutin. The next day I can get up, drive to the studio and find out I need to be on a flight to London with nine suitcases for the Royal Wedding. There could be a day I get to go to the Shoe Dazzle showroom and give my input on the new styles. The next day I could be shopping all day from Rodeo Drive, to Robertson to designer showrooms. Usually, my day consists of at least one fitting, at least three meetings, two conference calls, at least three assistants and I’ve been known to sleep with my blackberry in the bed and a sketch pad on my night stand...

CF: Who inspires your style? Any celebrities, editors, traveling etc?

AS: I could spend hours in fabric stores! I love looking through vintage wallpaper books to get inspiration for fashion. I believe in reading every type of magazine from home décor to the J.Crew catalog to Inside Weddings to Teen Vogue, keep your eyes open all round, there’s inspiration all around if you look for it. My inspiration also comes from my travels all around the world from Istanbul to Greece.

CF: What is the greatest reward about your job?

AS: I love being able to help people look and feel good about themselves. I can meet a new client who has never gotten compliments on the way they look but after giving them a new style, confidence and a closet clean-out, they will call me and tell me they have never looked or felt better. If you look good you feel good and if you feel good you look good, it’s as simple as that!

CF: What’s your go-to shopping spot in LA?

AS: My stylist secret is getting different items from all over, so that you never look like you’re head to toe dressed from the same store. I love shopping all over from I Want That Bag on Bedford for my vintage Chanel jewelry, to Kitson on Robertson, to Domenico Vacca on Rodeo, to Veronica M. on Beverly. It’s all about mixing it up!

CF: What is on your blogroll?

AS: TheBlondeandTheBrunette.com, Goop.com, Misscommunicashion.com, poshglam.com, and youceleb.com.

CF: Favorite place you have traveled for work?

AS: I am so lucky that my job takes me to so many amazing places, but I love going to the Cannes Film Festival, I always love going to New York, but ask me in a few weeks when I get back from the Royal Wedding in London!

CF: Describe yourself in one word?

AS: Grateful

CF: Any last words of wisdom for our readers aspiring to break into styling and entertainment post grad?

AS: Keep your eye on the goal, work harder, longer, and better than the person next to you, be the first one in to your job and the last one to leave, keep a positive attitude, even when things seem really bad, and make sure you are passionate and love doing whatever you do every day. You will naturally excel and succeed if you are doing something you love. Be really nice to everyone you work with because in ten years they’ll be running the studio!

Style On,

Amy Levin
