STYLE GURU STYLE: It's A Wrap

The first time someone turned me onto the idea that I could wear what was essentially a large wool blanket as an article of clothing, my only question was “How many times a week can I pull this off?” When I saw Acne’s pre-fall 2015 collection, I knew the answer was as many as I was willing to try. The collection is an amalgamation of patterns, textures and cuts full of massive coats and A-line skirts.

The look that really made me pause is the first one in the collection, in which the model is swaddled, arms and all, into an engulfing lilac sweater. One thing that really caught my eye about the look was the lace trim coming out of the mass of knit material. While the lace gives the look a sense of delicacy that contrasts the overwhelming bulk of the sweater, the two materials aren’t so different: both lace and knitwear have their origins in crochet, which ties them together despite their perceived differences.

I wanted to bring this unlikely unity into my interpretation of Acne’s look, so I started with a simple lace shift dress with some gold detailing. I thought the gold would really pop with the jewel tone of my sweater, while still remaining subtle enough to not become the focus of the outfit. I chose a sweater in a rich emerald to bring some pizzazz to the otherwise monochrome outfit, but opted for a simple cut and knit pattern to keep my textures from clashing. Because you can never be too bundled in the grips of winter, I topped the whole ensemble off with this blanket cape that handily doubles as a scarf (my new favorite piece of multifunctional clothing).

Get My Look: 1. An oversized sweater. 2. An extra-oversized scarf. 3. Some delicate contrast.
