Turtlenecks have always been a favorite of mine. I think they are incredibly sophisticated but also strangely comforting, perhaps because my mother always wore them while I was growing up. With such a passion for the turtleneck, it would be an understatement to say I was ecstatic that the DKNY fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection was full of them. This collection is absolutely breathtaking. With turtleneck after turtleneck showing up on the runway, pops of color and a tailored structure that is bold yet feminine, this collection is incredibly inspiring. It has sparked a whole new fire for my love of turtlenecks. I also found that Donna Karan’s bold structured designs can easily be adapted into more feminine and wearable looks, which go marvelously with, of course, a turtleneck.
I took inspiration from this collection to create a look that is more suitable for college life, yet it still fits my personal style. I chose a gray turtleneck sweater that is more fitted than the ones in DKNY’s collection. Although I am a huge fan of oversized sweaters, I thought this one was more flattering for this particular look. To mimic the stiff structure of the pieces in Donna Karan’s collection, I decided to go for a structured plum circle skirt. This skirt personalizes the look, as I wear circle skirts on a daily basis, but also adds a pop of color.
To keep from getting cold, I am wearing a pair of sheer black tights and black combat boots. The shoes in the DKNY collection are pretty clunky, so I thought the edginess of the boots captured that essence pretty well. This collection was fairly simplistic. To accessorize, I just threw on my Pandora charm bracelet and a silver statement necklace to add some glam. There were a couple black leather handbags featured in the collection as well, which meant I had to include my black kate spade bag to finish this look off.
Get My Look:Â 1. A fabulous turtleneck. 2. A structured skirt. 3. Combat boots.
