In what felt like an instant, New York Fashion Week came and went. You saw snippets of the delicious runway shows, the Insta-worthy brand activations, and the outfit pictures of your favorite influencers at every crosswalk in SoHo (not mad about it, though). As the glitter settles and NYFW comes to a close for the season, CF is highlighting some work you might have missed amidst the chaos.
On September 10, Flying Solo NYC, a fashion cooperative, held their ‘Ones to Watch’ runway show. Seasonally, the company showcases emerging, independent designers from around the world. The collections range in garment type, style and aesthetic. If you’re looking to expand your knowledge of fashion design, or simply gain inspiration from refreshing new looks, here are five independent designers to start following:
01. ANI Clothing
ANI Clothing pieces are whimsical yet captivating on the runway. Founder and designer, Shivani Aggarwal gained her start at Parsons School of Design and has now created collections featured in both Paris and New York fashion weeks.
ANI incorporates youthful silhouettes, bright colors and feather detailing for maximalist looks that epitomize fun. This featured runway look includes a heart shaped layered top and feather trimmed jeans.

02. Maria Pavan
The Maria Pavan collection was a major standout at the Flying Solo show. The Brazilian, ready-to-wear knitwear garments were unique and extremely eye catching.
Maria Pavan’s use of bright hues and playful patchwork patterns was unforgettable. Of the range of garments in the collection, the two piece sets made the biggest statement. Tying in this current, major trend with beautiful artistry resulted in fabulous, refreshing looks.

03. Orbaez
Orbaez’s silky garments were breathtaking on the runway. Bright turquoise shades, lime greens, vibrant oranges and statement metallics made up the memorable collection.
The Orbaez brand aims to represent the founder, Eric Ortiz Baez’s Puerto Rican heritage through relaxed, tropical pieces.
The breezy silhouette of each garment paired with the luster of the fabrics used translated into an elegant yet laid back runway experience.
Be sure to follow Orbaez’s story as the brand continues to take off.
04. Ihraa Swim
Sustainable and ethical Australian brand, Ihraa Swimwear certainly made a splash at NYFW. The elevated swim collection was comprised of unique silhouettes and exciting pattern work.
Ihraa takes pride in creating swimwear “for every adventure” and the range of looks presented did just that. From the rash guard style featured, to wrap tops and cheeky bottoms this line has something for everyone.
As summer comes to an end, use Ihraa Swim to inspire your next vacation look.
05. Paulina's Friends
The Paulina’s Friends runway collection was like nothing else at the Flying Solo show. The Berlin based brand brought a costume-like sense of whimsy to the runway.
While mixing bold patterns and playful textures, the collection still upheld an elevated feel. Paulina’s Friends used relaxed, draping silhouettes layered atop one another.
This Brand will inspire you to add a little something extra to your look whether that be through the use of “mismatching” or by just throwing on another layer. Follow Paulina’s Friends for more of the fun.
