Hello, my name is Rosie Gass and I’ll be your college Fashionista this evening, please sit back, get comfortable and enjoy the ride (get it – it’s like I’m a flight attendant but for fashion).
Jokes aside, I’m entering my sophomore year as a Fashion Merchandising major at Kent State University. When looking for a college I knew I wanted two things: to leave my home state of California and to go to a reputable fashion school. I found the perfect combination of something different and something valuable in Kent State.
I was born and raised in the Bay Area – no, I don’t go to the beach everyday and yes, I will correct you if you call San Francisco “San Fran”. I have so much love for where I’m from but I believe that living somewhere nothing like where you grew up is important to get perspective.
Though I believe I have the California state of mind, I don’t have that stereotypical “California” style. I’m a big fan of basics. Hands down, the vast majority of my clothes are grey, black and white- in fact you’ll rarely catch me wearing a color and if I am, it’s probably muted. Where I’m from is a huge part of who I am but it doesn’t dictate my wardrobe.
My interest in fashion has always been prevalent in my life, increasingly so starting in 8th grade. In 8th grade I realized that if I wore clothes like everyone else for the sake of fitting in, it was doing nothing to help me stay true to who I am. The brightly colored skinny jeans and band T-shirts of 7th grade weren’t me. So I started getting a lot of my clothes second hand – something I still do today – and wearing simple dresses. I started doing me and stopped dressing to be cool or to fit in.
I have a uniform that I pretty diligently stick to. I love simple T-shirts, often times men’s (like the one I’m wearing in this outfit) and sometimes even from the boy’s section because why not. My style is very straightforward. I’m not interested in having a heavily seasonal wardrobe, wearing crazy colors or statement jewelry. To me, fashion and style should be more about presenting yourself in a way that’s true to you and less about following the latest, hottest trends. If you’re into being trendy, that’s awesome! Do you! But I’m going to stick to basics. 🙂
