In high school, I abandoned my Victoria’s Secret PINK sweatpants and UGGs and traded them in for something more refined. Okay, so I bought a blazer but I still dreamt of the day that I would don the looks only seen on the runways of Fashion Week. And then something (or someone) amazing happened—his name: Alexander Wang. He, with his studded leather bags and focus on shades rather than colors, made me realize that my dream of looking like I stepped straight off the runway did not have to mean I was going to some crazy, high fashion event. You could even wear his style to school.
When I found this Fashionista walking through the city campus, I was immediately drawn to the nothingness found in her outfit, as it brought me back to my discovery of Wang. The simplicity found in these monotonous colors make the look effortlessly chic. There was no need to add outlandish colors or even a hint of gold to her silver jewelry, as the touch of print in the middle of her tight turtleneck crop top said it all.
What does it say exactly? The name of the brand, Stüssy. Still simple, but to the point, it gives onlookers a dash of black and close friends the ability to read it. The font is a delicate and subtle feature that adds to the mysteriousness of the girl wearing it.
While mysterious, her jewelry does give us some insight to her identity. This style maven, originally from Hong Kong and now native to New South Wales’ lands, told me that the Bulgari watch was a present from her father for her graduation, while the Pandora bracelet, with just three charms (still simple), represent all the international friends she’s made in Australia. Another reminder that it is, memories and all, truly in the details.
How To: Stick to basics like jeans, like the ones shown above from Topshop, and a color palette of shades, and the look will be effortless. Find simple items and make them your own by styling them with jewelry that can tell its own story. Refer back to Stüssy, a brand built on adding bits of their name into their pieces without being too obvious. Killer boots, like some Dr. Martens heels, couldn’t hurt either.
