LOVE IT OR HATE IT—The '90s Revival

Let’s reminisce to a time long, long ago. Back when TGIF was a reason to stay in, a hashtag was still just a pound sign and the Backstreet Boys were actually boys and not dads. Yes, folks, I’m talking about the 1990s.

While there are certain things all people can agree have certainly improved since then (mainly internet speed and Justin Timberlake’s haircut), the recent return of ’90s fashion is definitely a hotbed issue. (Because, from what I hear, the next presidential election will rest on global warming and whether overalls are “hot” or not.)

Like with any trend, the ’90s movement started off slow. First, it was the reintroduction of the high-top Converse. Then we saw graphic T-shirts. The next thing you know, every Fashionista from coast to coast is wearing high-waisted ripped jeans, a halter crop top, platform sandals, taking straight-faced selfies and saying “Rad.” This trend has transcended beyond just clothing—it is the whole ’90s attitude that is making a comeback.

Some think this fascination with the ’90s is odd—given that most of the consumers of this trend weren’t even alive/old enough to appreciate it the first time around. They tie flannels around their waists but don’t know who Kurt Cobain is or only think of Gwen Stefani as a judge from The Voice. So someone has to ask—has not enough time passed to “bring back” the ’90s?

I remember when Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were just known singularly as “Michelle Tanner.” So, as someone who grew up in the ’90s, I think I have some authority when I say I am excited for their return. Sure, there are certain pieces that should stay in the previous millennium (I’m looking at you, bucket hats). But, to me, it’s like a fashion time machine. Beyond the jelly sandals, overalls and knee-high socks there are the fond memories and nostalgia I am able to relive through these garments.

So if fashion can be on trend and make you feel feelings, what’s the debate?
