If you can recall M.C. Hammer’s song “U Can’t Touch This,” than you might also remember his famous harem pants, who many thought would also be a one-hit-wonder. But contrary to popular belief and to some individuals deep dismay, the harem pants are back and better than ever! I must admit, I haven’t always been a fan of these pants. When they made a resurgence in the 2000s, the characteristic baggy style always seemed a little too extreme for me. However, I believe this decade is bringing a more polished appeal to many 2000s trends and the harem pants happen to be one of them.
This trend has caught major traction since its most recent recognition, due to its apparent versatility. The majority of the Fashionistas I’ve seen embracing this trend wear them with a funky pattern; a trend which has been popularly coined as “funky pants.” Along with that, the recent runway activewear frenzy gave us joggers, which definitely has roots in harem style. Whichever way you want to wear it, I think we can credit the success of this trend to its sheer comfort. They’re basically socially acceptable sweatpants; what could be better?
This Fashionista opted for a more demure version of the pants with a simple black pair. The simple combination of the pants with a nautical striped long sleeve convey a certain style with ease. Which can be comparable to the effortless parisian street style every fashion blogger seems to name as the gold standard. This Fashionista made the look her own by incorporating an eye-catching necklace, cute rings and a polished bracelet.
So whether you’re stuck in the library or headed to a friend’s party, try out the ever versatile harem pants!
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Stick to only one major accessory at a time. If you have big, awesome earrings that stand out, maybe skip the necklace.”
