We all know that nothing will ever be the new black. It’s a color that simply cannot be topped. Not only does it look good on everyone, but it’s also the easiest key to a simple and chic look. While all black is simple and simple is good (especially for college students), it also get extremely boring…and scary. As much as we would like to think we can pull off all black all the time, our fellow collegiate may start to become a little concerned if we are clad in black 24/7.
This week’s Fashionista switched up her otherwise all black look by adding a subtle pattern. In her case, she picked pinstripe, ripped denim. I really like the holes and frayed hemline on the bottom on these pants. It gives an otherwise clean look an element of grunge, and we all know I love the grunge.
Pinstripe pants sound like a lot to commit to, but this Fashionista chose a pair that features two lighter colors, rather than contrasting two opposing colors. Adding a slight pop of pattern or color is a great way to break up a monochromatic look. It doesn’t take much to draw the focus away from the black. Even with her pinstripes being as subtle as they are, it does the trick flawlessly.
To keep with the simple trend, she added minimal jewelry. Alex and Ani bracelets are super trendy right now; lots of college students are all about stacking as many as they can on one wrist but in the case of this Fashionista, less is more.
The new trend in shoes seems to be mixing athletic footwear with a non-athletic outfit. Say so long to squeezing your feet into your little black shoes for the daywear look, it is now officially cool to be comfy. Thank goodness, right? Her Nikes are both practical and sleek.
So next time you pull out that go-to black outfit that looks a little something like what a ninja might wear to a funeral, follow this Fashionista’s lead and add a little element of pattern to your look.
