Like the current weather, I aim to be chill. Though, in the midst of midterm season that seems unfeasible. I, a persnickety and somewhat aloof university student, fuss over what color pen I should use to write my class notes in, down to what shoe would pair well with a corduroy trouser, all while carrying out several internal monologues that usually start with “On the other hand….” But, I try not to let that seep through and I do so in the way I dress. I guess illusions are sort of a mainstay this season, whether we’re talking about the falsies perched on upper eyelids or pretending to be self-possessed, when really we’re a ball of angst.
In light of this, my look this week was inspired by the A.P.C. fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection. Jean Touitou showcased his French fashion savoir-faire once more with this line of smart looks. It’s a great mix of pieces that are complementary to the female figure, as well as being androgynous and straight-cut. While looking through the collection, what comes to mind is the classic and unpretentious mien of Joan Didion. The fall line features Butler jeans, which are thoroughly broken in A.P.C. raw indigo denim jeans returned by clients and recycled by the company, in various wears and washes, along with plaid shirts and scarves and coats galore. Overall, this collection married two of my favorite things—boyish charm and simplicity.
Striving for a similar result, I opted for a straight-cut black collarless longline jacket with puff sleeves that has quickly become a staple in my closet and paired it with distressed pale blue jeans. You get serious prim vibes from the black jacket, which is swiftly contrasted by the raw holes in the jeans.
Plaid seems to reach a new height of ubiquity in the fall, in garb and décor. A Thanksgiving table setting seems incomplete without a touch of tartan and plaid scarves of every color are coiled around pedestrians’ necks. So in the spirit of following trends, I threw on an old, oversized houndstooth button-down with its own quaint appeal. I completed the look with a pair of black Chelsea boots and a sandy beige tote bag.
I tend to gravitate towards larger sizes in order to achieve the relaxed, worn-in look I usually strive for. I admit that I’m guilty of rummaging in my brother’s wardrobe, as well as my father’s. So, I very much encourage others to sub in some men’s pieces to get whatever look they so desire.
