Dark and stormy—these words characterize the current weather, my mood about mid-terms and my recent wardrobe decisions. From leather and pleats, to gingham and flowing fabric, my look has as much going on as any turbulent tempest.
In this shadowy season we see layers, mixed textures, leather and dark colors. These attributes also happen to describe Vetements fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection. The design collective, headed up by Demna Gvasalia, focused less on groundbreaking fashion this past season and more on what their target audience, young urbanite cool kids, would want to wear. The collection features lots of oversized outerwear, as well as structured cargo and leather pants. Tops and dresses were both high-necked and flowing. The jewelry used was minimal, but if it was present it made a statement and caught the eye.
While in some cases “ready-to-wear” can be anything but wearable, with Vetements I found it easy to translate their style into a look of my own without too much deviation from the concept. I started by focusing on a color. While the ready-to-wear collection did include a spectrum of colors, many of them were accents to a primarily black base, so I decided to stick to a monochromatic color scheme.
The oversized clothing look was an easy step for me. I buy a lot of my clothes a size up just for comfort as a general rule, so my black and white top gave off the same breezy vibe as Vetements’ dress shirts, and featured a similar high collarless neckline.
Vetements’ coat-focused collection featured massive trench coats and leather jackets that seem to engulf the wearer. As a person of shorter stature, this is a common occurrence for me, so I took advantage of my height deficit in this particular circumstance. The long jacket, a mix of leather and wool with an off center zipper, reflects the disheveled styling of the fall collection in more ways than one.
For my pants, I tried to carry on with the dark structured look. The lacquered motorcycle pants give a leather pant vibe while offering more comfort, flexibility and washing options.
My entire look, as well as the Vetements collection, is a bit androgynous and lends it self to variations for men or women to adopt in their own styling of it. Mix and match pieces and don’t let the gender binary limit your shopping.
