STYLE GURU STYLE: Lady In Red

When was the last time you watched a runway show and thought, “Wow! I would totally wear these outfits for a night out with my friends!”? I think it’s safe to say your answer is probably never. While everything about a runway show screams glamour, most people (myself included) find it difficult to look glamourous in some of the high-fashion trends that we find on the runways. Unless you’re an international supermodel, a full length fur coat or masculine-looking trousers will probably turn heads for the wrong reasons. So how do we make the beautiful pieces of art that these designers create a little less red-carpet ready and a little more college campus friendly?

When I saw the J. Mendel fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection, I found endless possibilities. Although the outfit I put together doesn’t directly mirror any of J. Mendel’s exactly, I took inspiration from the color scheme and overall aesthetic that he created. While black and white has been done time and time again, this collection is fresh and unexpected with pops of color, like the bright red I used in my ensemble. The plunging necklines that appear in many of his looks add a fun and flirty feel to the collection, while the patterns and fabrics keep them sophisticated and refined at the same time.

In my outfit, I attempted to capture the overall vibe of J. Mendel’s collection in a look that you can rock wherever you go. I paired a crisp white skort with this eye-catching red crop top, and added a flowy black kimono to tie it all together. Finishing off with black booties and simple accessories keeps the attention on the contrasting colors and varied textures of the outfit. With this look, you’ll be sure to turn heads, even if you’re not a runway model or a Victoria’s Secret angel.

Get My Look: 1. A simple envelope skort. 2. A bright colored crop top. 3. A kimono.
