WHAT TO WEAR: Fall

The transition from summer to fall fashion always features a sharp jump from eclectic, bright tones to rich burgundies and bronze. Expect Marsala—Pantone’s color of the year for 2015—to be a dominant choice in lipsticks and blouses for women. Men can expect the same emphasis on black staple items as mirrored in Balmain’s upcoming collaboration with H&M. Yet, there’s a missing middle ground in terms of a solid transitional color for between seasons. In my eyes, this Fashionista hit the nail on the head for the best summer-fall transitional color: olive green.

Rather than making a dramatic jump to the dark colors for fall, embrace earth tones like brown, orange and green like this Fashionista. While the color combinations itself sound strange, they pair up nicely when looking at the composite outfit. The key to utilizing these tones is to balance the color intensity for each item. For example: this Fashionista selected a stand-out shade of green to pair with black tights and booties. Yet, she opted for a light, camel-colored fedora to highlight the gold trims on her dress and keep the look balanced. If instead she wore a black fedora, the final look would be more appropriate for winter or edgier aspirations.

One Simple Change: As mornings are getting colder with each passing day, throw on a longlined coat over this outfit when heading to early classes. For my fellow Californians who are still enjoying warm, summery afternoons, simply take out your tights mid-day when you have to run errands.
