A trend, according to Merriam-Webster, can be defined as “something that is currently popular or fashionable.” For those of us who study fashion or even just pay close attention to it, we’ve seen a myriad of trends come and go within the past five years alone. Remember how colored denim was the hottest thing going a little while ago? And let us not forget the significant amount of height brought to us all via the sneaker wedge, and even the questionable bird-esque vibe that many of us tried to achieve when applying feather extensions to our hair.
There is one trend, however, that began a few years back and managed to rise above the rest while morphing into a classic. When army jackets first marched into the trendiest of stores, I was in love with their muted color and easy-going silhouette. I was hesitant to buy one though, because I figured the trend would pass. Eventually I jumped on the bandwagon anyway, and a few years later the jacket still remains the perfect piece.
This Fashionista exhibited the timelessness of the army jacket by incorporating it into her everyday campus look. The base of her outfit consisted of a blue tunic, black textured leggings and brown riding boots. She balanced out the darker colors by layering on a bright green scarf, and then she topped off the whole look with a trusty army jacket.
I love that this Fashionista recognized how versatile the army green color is. By working it into her outfit, which already consisted of a dark blue and a light green, she treated the army green color as a neutral. There’s something to be said for the versatility of the army jacket when it comes to its color and shape. It’s the ideal piece for fall in that you can layer it up with a casual look, as this Fashionista did, or experiment with it by dressing it up.
Whether the army jacket trend is actually here to stay forever or is just another fashion statement that will eventually pass with time is hard to tell. For now, however, it is safe to say that it’s cool, versatile and just the thing you need to complete your autumnal wardrobe. (It is also safe to say that the army jacket is definitely a better investment piece than those aforementioned feather extensions you bought a few years back, but at least they were fun while they lasted, right?).
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “It’s getting so much colder! I would definitely say it’s time to start bundling up by breaking out the scarves and hats.”
