One thing that almost all college students have in common is that they will have to partake in an interview at some point in their college careers; whether it is interviewing for an internship, a job or even graduate school! However, it can be tricky to dress for an interview. You might be dressing too casual, or too similar to everyone else!
Like you’ve probably heard many times in your life, “First impressions are key” and they can, in fact make or break if you get the position or not. However, a wonderful way to make a great first impression would be to dress the part! This means that you must make sure that you are dressing for the position you are applying for. For example, you can take more risks and showcase your style to a greater extent for a fashion internship interview, compared to a medical school interview where you will have to tone it down a bit. But, the most important thing you can do is to display your personal style without veering away too much from dressing the part of the position you’re applying for.
I personally think that when you’re preparing for an interview, planning your outfit should also be given priority too. First off it’s a lot of fun and secondly wearing a unique outfit will definitely resonate more in the interviewer’s mind! So, instead of the stereotypical black slacks or pencil skirt, paired with a monotone dress shirt, opt for something that sticks out and truly captures your personality. You can add a pop of color or pattern to liven up your outfit, and accessorizing can also elevate a plain outfit to something that stands out!
This Fashionisto is definitely interview ready! He is sporting a baby blue button-down with a navy cardigan, paired with gray slacks and black dress shoes. This look by itself wouldn’t stand out, however, he adds his personal style by accessorizing this seemingly plain outfit. The purple polka-dot tie, black suspenders, brown leather messenger bag, along with a block M pin, all help boost his outfit. This outfit really allows him to stand out, compared to the competition!
One Simple Change: By taking the tie off and opting for a pair of khaki’s and boat shoes, you can transition from interview mode to date-night mode!
