STYLE GURU STYLE: Americana Exotica

For this look, I was inspired by Marc Jacobs’s spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection. Featuring the distinct colors of the American flag, each runway look pulled from different eras throughout America’s fashion history. The entire collection is largely vintage and thrift shop-inspired with it’s layering of patterns and different types of fabrics. After seeing this entire collection, I searched my closet for some of my own red, white and blue vintage pieces and threw them on for a day out with friends. There’s nothing wrong with a little fourth of July fun in December, is there? I might just be a little excited for summer.

Before I started getting ready, I decided I would do a more modern take on one of Marc Jacobs’s looks. I opted for a classic little black dress, since they’re always quick, simple and match practically anything and everything they’re paired with. For that vintage flare, I followed Marc Jacobs’s lead and layered my favorite denim jacket over a red button-down flannel shirt. Layering is perfect for this time of year, too, since it starts to get cold in the mornings and late at night, but is warmer during the day. As seen in Marc Jacobs’s collection, I chose to accessorize my outfit with a large statement necklace, a white baseball hat and my favorite black suede ankle booties. Aside from pulling from Marc Jacobs’s collection, I drew inspiration from Judd Nelson’s outfit in the classic movie “The Breakfast Club” and from Michael J. Fox’s main outfit in the “Back to the Future” trilogy, both of which wore a signature denim jacket and layered their red, white and blue pieces in a truly iconic way.

Get My Look: 1. A little black dress. 2. A denim jacket. 3. Any button-down flannel shirt.
