STYLE GURU BIO: Lydia Dallas

My name is Lydia, and I decided in third grade that I wanted to be a fashion designer. Ever since I was able to hold a crayon, I have been creating styles for my Barbie dolls. So, to make my ideas a reality, I started sewing lessons as a little 8-year-old girl. Beginning with a super basic pair of pajama pants, which eventually led to backpacks, purses, dresses and a lined blazer.

Needless to say, I felt quite prepared when I started classes in fashion design as a freshman at Kent State University. Wanting to choose a career that I was passionate about, I was so excited to start working toward my future in the fashion industry. I’ve had to opportunity to study abroad in Florence and travel around Europe, as well as intern in New York City this past summer. Along the way, I picked up bits and pieces of style that I incorporated into my own wardrobe as well as my designs (one of my favorite things that I collected are these chunky black platform heels for walking along the cobblestone streets).

Although I like to admire nice things and enjoy paging through fashion magazines to read about the new trends, I’m a typical broke college student who can’t shop as much as I’d like. Most of my money goes toward fabric for school projects and food, my other favorite thing. Considering I haven’t grown much over the years, one thing that I try to do is find ways to rejuvenate some of my old clothes that I’ve held onto but don’t use very often.

I would say that my style is a blend of many styles. My closet contains tastes of my Kentucky roots with gingham button-downs and suede boots, to a city mindset with my favorite leather jacket and heels. On the rare occasions when I don’t have a project to work on for school, I enjoy using the creative skills I’ve developed to work on something unique for myself. The asymmetrical skirt that I’m wearing here originally served as a project for my design studio. Made from uncolored muslin and jersey knit, I dyed it to give it a new look. I also crocheted my necklace/scarf, a super simple DIY project that can add interest to many outfits.

I’m really looking forward to working with CollegeFashionista and can’t wait to see what this semester brings!
