Hi fashion lovers! I’m Jennifer, and I’m a freshman at the University of Washington in Seattle studying Business Administration. I knew I wanted to join the Style Guru bandwagon when one of my favorite fashion bloggers, Carly Heitlinger of The College Prepster, talked about it on her blog. It seems like such a unique experience–I’m looking forward to everything it has to offer!
My interest in fashion didn’t peak until the third grade. Before that, I was a bumbling mess of bright pinks and sweatpants with the everyday, mud-caked sneakers. I met a friend (who I am, unfortunately, no longer in touch with) who was quite…mature, let’s say. By nine years old, she had already watched Mean Girls and 13 Going on 30, which spurred her love for fashion. I remember during silent reading hour one day, she decided to experiment with my “look.” She took my glasses and put them on my head to appear less nerdy, and suggested I wear jeans with my floral top next time instead of the purple sweatpants I was already wearing. Curious by her interest in my clothes, I decided to take her advice.
While I can’t say that I skipped the hoodie phase with Abercrombie kids and Hollister in middle school, I did develop a sense of fashion throughout my high school years. I went from hoodies to cardigans and flats, to more experimentation with preppy and glam looks. I hope to live in New York City someday, so of course I have to play around with many styles!
This current look, is not something I’d wear to class, but more like a night out with friends to feel extra sassy. To start off, let’s talk about the vest I’m wearing! I used to think these fur vests were too much for me, but I’ve learned to love how warm they are. They look fabulous, and you feel just a little more posh when you don a faux fur vest. Next, the turtleneck. Guys, I used to despise turtlenecks to no end–I would have much rather worn a scarf if I wanted to keep my neck warm. However, with all of the turtlenecks on other Fashionistas, they made me want to try one out. And I’m so glad I did! They are literally the best things to snuggle with. Moving down the body, I chose some olive green pants to keep the winter colors theme going. On my feet, I have my favorite pair of rainboots–with it raining 24/7 in Seattle, you know a girl needs a pair of nice rainboots. To accessorize, I put on layered gold chain that would brighten up the look a bit.
Experimenting with fashion in college is no easy feat, especially because we all have such limited closet space in the dormitories. But I hope to plan outfits outside the box, and to be inspired by the other Fashionistas on campus and on CollegeFashionista!
