Howdy Fashionistas! My name is Marissa and I’m a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh majoring in psychology and neuroscience. I’m so pumped to be writing for CollegeFashionista and starting my Style Guru internship for 2016 spring semester!
My style is very diverse, but can generally be described as classy with a touch of edge. My favorite eras are definitely the ’50s and ’90s, so I’m always trying my best to mesh my inner Kurt Cobain and Doris Day. Flare skirts and combat boots? YES, PLEASE. No matter the style I’m sporting, I trying to stick to the three primary colors: tan, gray and black. Duh.
In this particular outfit, I am sporting a bit more edge with solid black tights, black combat boots, and an olive cargo jacket with faux fur hood. As much as I love pleasing the grunge gods, I decided to appeal to the classic side and added a black and white houndstooth printed high waited flare skirt to complete the look. Accessories, however are what really bring the style together. It’s the little things that make your main pieces pop! I love utilizing fun seasonal pieces. Peeping under my cargo jacket is a gray and white faux fur vest which I LOVE to wear especially during the winter. The fauxy vest pulls any outfit together and adds a touch of glamour. I finish my simple layered ensemble with a black crocheted hat, perfect for the cold weather. Hats are a blast and can add so much character to any style. I usually head straight to H&M, Gap or Express for great staples, but the majority of my shopping is centered around thrift stores! “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” has never been more true! You never know what can be lurking in the racks of a second-hand store.
Experiences shape everything, especially how we express ourselves through fashion. Music is one of the most influential aspects of my life, and I’d like to think that my taste in music has motivated my style. I take my favorite genres such as jazz and rock and twist into my own design. It’s amazing to see how different cultures, eras and people can have such an influence on fashion. Personality is what makes fashion an art. Words cannot explain how excited I am to share student’s stories about their own style and can only hope to inspire you all to rock a little something new to create your own masterpiece.
