Living in America I had my choice of outfits for each season and never worried too much about my clothes. I always had enough and could change my mind about three times a day if I wanted to. What a luxury that is. Now, living in cold and rainy Scotland, I have a much more limited wardrobe and have had to learn to adjust to my lack of “fashionable” options. I came to Edinburgh with two suitcases filled with sweaters, some jeans and a lot of tan shoes. So, my style has been shaped by exactly that.
My first clothing purchase in Scotland was my tartan scarf from Primark, the place to go for cheap fashionable clothes in the U.K. Since this purchase I have returned to the floors of this store more than I should. But even though I am inspired and influenced by Scottish trends and traditions, I am a stickler for my American comfort items. My Timberland boots have traveled with me while studying abroad to Ireland and back, seeing much of U.S. soil between then and now. My American Eagle Outfitters jeans are a must on any day. I still haven’t found a brand that flatters my body the way AEO jeans do.
I would describe my style and personality as laid back and creative, yet classic. Maybe my personality wouldn’t be described as classic (I’m getting my MSc in Book History which in itself is pretty unique) but I would say that I gravitate towards things that have that classic feel. I love neutral colors, own only gray and white sweaters and love a good pair of jeans that have been worn in and loved. I was not always this way, preferring an Avril Lavigne rebel look growing up, but as I travel the world I have found that this is what I love the most. I am inspired by the colors of nature: the white of mountain tops, the green on a great forest and the brown of mud you sometimes have to risk getting all over your shoes. You will find these elements in my everyday whether it be in my footwear or the color of my favorite jacket.
