STYLE GURU BIO: Sarah Kohlbeck

Hm. Style Guru. I’m not sure I would ever consider myself a “guru” of anything, but if there’s one genre I would aspire to reach “guru-ness” status of, it’s definitely style.

My name is Sarah, and I am from St. Paul, MN. I currently attend the Savannah College of Art and Design. I am a fashion marketing/management and photography student, and let me tell you- I seriously love it here. If there is one place I’m constantly pulling inspiration from, it’s my school and the people that attend it. Another big influence on my style is my job. I work at Urban Outfitters and can honestly say that this job has become such a big part of my life. People come in and out all day, owning their own style and being completely confident about, and it inspires me so much. However, I have to say that my biggest fashion influence would probably being traveling. The one thing that stops most of us is cost, but traveling doesn’t need to be a trip to Paris. It can be a two-hour car trip to middle-of-nowhere Georgia to see a waterfall. This spontaneity reflects itself in my choices of apparel.

If I were to describe my style in one sentence (which is very hard for me), it would be this: I consider my style to be a sort of broke art student, high fashion-inspired, touch of street and yet 80’s gym class vibe. Yes, I do know that is a lot to handle.

The outfit I am wearing in these pictures is honestly one of my favorites, and it has all the warmth and comfort in the world. First off, I would like to mention the pants because they are a GIFT FROM GOD. I have been eyeing these at work for so long; nothing compares to the comfort of these babies. I’ve layered a terra cotta-colored American Apparel turtleneck and another glorious urban find. My beautiful kicks were bought from H&M a couple years ago. My coat (which I scored for only $50 at Anthropologie) is my latest obsession. I’ve been trying to fuse elements of high fashion into my wardrobe because sometimes I end up looking a little rough around the edges—which is completely fine—but I am a fashion student, and I’ve got to step up my game! All of this outfit’s greatness would be nothing without my dearly-loved Fjallraven Kanken backpack, which is in my favorite color at the moment (and the pantone color of the year).

At this point in my bio, I think it is time for me to talk about my life as a photographer, since the majority of this time is going to be spent with me behind the camera. I’ve loved photography all my life, but I’ve gotten serious about it in the past two to three years.  Currently, I’m a working as a freelance photographer in which jobs are surprisingly unplentiful in art school. However, I am doing work for a few companies and focusing on the study of the art itself. In my free time, I enjoy taking portraits of my friends and the people who inspire me, mostly on 35mm film.

Feel free to keep up with my articles to come. I’m so excited to share what inspires me every day!
