Hi Fashionistas/os! My name is Sam Yohannes. I am a third year journalism student at Ryerson University in Toronto. This bio marks the beginning of my sixth semester as a CollegeFashionista intern. I’m thrilled to be back for another round as both a Style Guru and Social Media intern.
I feel as though I gain something new every semester, and I know this one will be no different. There is something fulfilling about turning hobbies into something tangible. Over the year and half that I have been contributing to CF, I have had the privilege of energetically working on my writing and photography.
I’ve learned that good photos hinge on proper framing, lighting and a good initial raw capture as opposed to the filters and corrections you slap on in the editing room. The “magic” of post, though important, isn’t nearly as vital as achieving the optimal photo in the outset and in the moment.
In addition to the lessons I’ve learned in practice, there are also several opportunities that this internship has afforded me, including features in MTV and Seventeen.com (read: Teen Goals), as well as getting to contribute to CollegeFashionista’s homepage articles. When I first applied, the thought of coming this far never crossed my mind and this unexpected treat just keeps on giving. And in every bio, I feel the need to reiterate that my time with CF has been a period of personal growth.
By shuffling through my past posts, it becomes apparent that my style recently has been a cross between my affinity for eccentric colours and prints, as well as a fondness I have for monochrome palettes. My eternal style crush is Raf Simon. His white collar tucked aptly into a black sweater, paired with a black trouser and complemented by white sneakers look has become my uniform. Although he focuses on menswear, I will forever covet his creations. His collections drive my ‘borrow from the boys’ mantra. Naturally, I’m still pining over his collaborative sneaker with Adidas.
The population of Style Gurus at Ryerson has grown exponentially in the last five semesters. There are so many all round interesting people on campus and stylish to the boot, and the more people there are working to seek out and recognize these individuals, the better. This semester, we have eight wonderful Ryerson interns, and I can’t wait to see what sartorial gems they come across on and near campus.
