STYLE GURU STYLE: Giving the Cold Shoulder

Tracking through the snow and slush everyday to and from school has seriously got me dreaming of warmer temperatures and sunny days. I’ve recently just started my second semester of university, and I’m already counting down the days until spring break starts. When traveling on the train to Toronto everyday, I can’t help but immerse myself into the latest issue of Vogue magazine while drooling over the new spring fashion trends. It’s clear that this upcoming season holds a lot of new and exciting trends waiting for me to embrace with open arms. It’s also important to start thinking about how you’re going to transition your existing winter wardrobe into spring and what pieces you want to start buying. Something that really stood out to me was the cutout shoulder trend, also known as the “cold shoulder.” I’ve been seeing this trend pop up on a lot of spring runway collections such as the Louis Vuitton spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection.

The reason I love this trend? Because it shows just a little bit of skin, which is refreshing after months of being bundled up in tons of layers to keep warm. Plus, it’s a great transition piece from winter to spring when it’s done with a long sleeve. In this look, I’m wearing a black long sleeve tee-shirt dress that features cutout shoulders. I always like to buy basic pieces that have some sort of subtle and unique detail; Having the cutout shoulder design really makes this plain black dress a lot more interesting and unpredictable. I wanted to keep the look very simple and monochromatic with black accessories and gold accents. This black leather cross-body bag is one of my most used purses because of its edgy appeal and versatility. To complement the gold hardware on the bag, I added a gold statement necklace and some studded bracelets. I also added a pair of patterned tights to break up the black and add some texture to the look to keep it more visually appealing. And of course, I couldn’t go wrong with a versatile pair of ankle boots that literally go with everything I own. To finish the entire ensemble, I added a brown knit hat featuring the cutest little pompom at the top. This hat keeps the look winter appropriate by adding a warm and cozy element.
