Living just on the outskirts of D.C., this city is crawling with high powered businessmen/women, politicians and real life Oliva Popes, so dressing the part is fairly important. The only problem is, how do you dress to the nines ready to take on Capitol Hill (or just tomorrow’s chemistry exam), on a college student’s salary? Well, my fellow Fashionistas/os, neutral color palettes are a major key to success.
This timeless simplistic fashion trend of using basic colors such as black, whites, nudes and my favorite, olive greens, has lasted over many fashion eras. From Audrey Hepburn’s little black Givenchy dress, to Beyoncé feeling reckless in hers, many have rocked the runway and the streets in neutral monochrome looks that looked classy, tasteful, and high-end. This season, a new form of neutral has taken over, olive green. As college students, we don’t necessarily have the funds to buy all of the designer clothes that we spend hours pinning on Pinterest, however a few neutral staple pieces such as a little black dress, nude heels and an olive green army jacket, can give us the same sophisticated look that we desire.
Much like this Fashionista did in her look, the key to neutrals is simplicity. She paired her olive green padded jacket with a pashmina scarf of the same color around her neck, demonstrating a rustic feeling contrasted with feminine vibes. With a hint of black in her jeans, the look is polished off nicely with gray suede ankle booties, another neutral color that works cohesively with the outfit. Under her padded coat, this Fashionista dons an olive green dress that gives off just the perfect amount of “elegant meets edgy.” With minimalistic accessories, this Fashionista has mastered the art of neutrals, a fashion trend that’ll empower you to take down anything that comes in your way.
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Always dress like you’re getting ready to see your worst enemy. This doesn’t necessarily mean dress in your fanciest clothes each time you decide to leave your house, sometimes simplicity is key. Never be afraid to try new styles or step out of your comfort zone. Fashion is all about experimenting. I challenge everyone to dress in the most neutral tones- tan, black, olive green and burgundy, and see how well you can dress up simplicity. As Kanye West says, ‘fashion ain’t no joke for me… It’s a way of life… creative expression and industry.'”
