STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Transitional Winter Trends

When I think of San Diego, two words come to mind: casual and flip flops. Even though mid-February is upon us and Fashionistas/os on the East Coast are still sporting their stylish trench coats, Southern California students are dressing like summer is in mid-swing.

Although most people choose to dress for each day’s current weather, some of the Fashionistas/os of the world love to dress for the current season. This means that although it may be 80 degrees in the state of California, other regions of the country have hit the negatives and are dressing for winter—as it still should be in February. However, that hasn’t stopped myself or a few other fashion-savvy students on my university campus from dressing for what should be “winter.”

Isn’t that the whole point of fashion and expressing yourself? Being able to take the weather as a challenge to create the best outfit possible for the current season? Living in a city where the weather is almost always the same temperature, I use my love for styling to create unique and exciting outfits no matter how hot it may be outside. I definitely try to stay away from those jean shorts and flip flops that are very “So-Cal” typical.

Luckily, I came across a Fashionista dressing in a way that best represents the temperature outside and the current season. From the moment I discovered this particular look, I knew that I had to share this great adaptation of a perfect seasonal outfit. From quarter-high socks peeping out of brown booties to the knit sweater paired with a skirt, this Fashionista took pieces that are great for both summer and winter to create the perfect look. Knit sweaters are commonly worn over bikinis in the warm summer months but are a great piece when transitioning into winter, whether they’re worn under a trench coat or over a skirt. The floral skirt is another great transitional season piece because it can be worn bare or with tights for year-round style. Finally, the quarter-high socks reminded me of a typical Blair Waldorf staple seen among many of her famous, winter Upper Eastside looks.

What I’ve come to realize living all these months in San Diego is that dressing in layers is a key part in surviving the winter and summer months. As worn by this fabulous Fashionista, sweaters are a perfect way to adhere to warm afternoons and cool nights in San Diego. Whether you find a pullover sweater or a casual cardigan, the styles are endless.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I really love booties and skirts or shorts! It’s super feminine and easy.”
