I may be mistaken, but I think we may be traveling back to the ’90s! Throughout watching the recent runway shows at New York Fashion Week, I noticed quite a bit of a textile that made me think, “Wow! What a throwback!” Velvet, the lavish and luxurious fabric, has seemingly become more and more popular in retailers and on the streets. This past weekend, my friend and I wanted to go out for the day just to enjoy the weather at a nearby park. When we met up, her outfit reminded me of just how popular velvet is becoming. Transitioning from winter to spring, the look grasped the darker colors of New York, but also encompassed femininity through the texture of the skirt. The luster of the skirt brings a sense of life to the look, which balances the denser neutral tones in her sweater and tights. The velvet skirt is flirtatious, and can be dressed up or down. Her look was casual enough to wear out on the weekend, but could easily be used for a nighttime look as well.
With fabrics as breathtaking as velvet, it’s important to not over indulge. Wearing velvet in moderation is the best way to showcase it, as it may be overlooked otherwise. You can easily create a look similar to this Style Guru’s through accessories, blouses or wide leg pants. Along with the boho trend, I have seen many retailers sell wide leg pants in velvet. You could also mix the ’90s and boho trend by wearing a velvet blouse that has bell sleeves. These looks would be showcasing the velvet in moderation, similar to what my friend Victoria did with her skirt in her look. In contrast, velvet has been very popular in smaller accessories as well. Scrunchies (also from the early ’90s) have been trending in most fast fashion retailers, such as Forever 21 and H&M. If details are your thing, the lustrous velvet fabric will be the perfect addition to any throwback look you decide to wear.
How To: You can easily accomplish this look by looking at accessible fast fashion houses such as Urban Outfitters and H&M. If you’re looking for a simple velvet skirt, check out Urban Outfitters for a chic skater skirt! H&M is also a great store to look in for cozy sweaters and sheer tights similar to those in this featured look! All of the pieces in this look are basics that can be styled together with other pieces, so you’re getting the most out of your dollar.
