Western European fashion in past centuries especially depicted the ideal woman as having the smallest waist possible by any means necessary. To accentuate (or even exaggerate) the waistline, a tautly fastened corset was attached to a fuller than full skirt. The skirt often had ruffles and pleated waistline embellishments similar to what we now call peplum. This look was a sign of status, wealth and femininity.
Both past and present styles operate under similar agendas to create a contrast between the waist and hips. Though variations of peplum pieces have existed for years, this style appears to have an exceptionally strong following as of late and is a must-have. What I love about the contemporary peplum look is that there are no corsets to be found. Peplum is now not restricted to a certain body type or population. Though it does exude elegance, this should not be mistaken for being matronly nor does it have an affiliation with a certain class. Despite the momentary flaring of the fabric, peplum garments are usually met with a sleek and formfitting silhouette at the hips for a classy approach to the hourglass figure. Any and all are welcome to try it, and it likely will not disappoint. It gives the semblance of curves and can detract from the midsection. Peplum pieces remind me of the premise of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: sometimes you just have to trust that the same pair of jeans will fit your entire friend group perfectly. Don’t overthink it or you’ll miss out on the magic.
Nowadays, there are peplum tops, skirts and dresses. Style icons like Solange and Miranda Kerr have been gracing the red carpet with peplum, while other Fashionistas flaunt peplum looks in interviews, at the workplace, on fun nights out and more. This Fashionista shines in her classy day-to-night look with her peplum dress. This outfit is such a convenient upgrade to the traditional pencil skirt and blouse combination. It is elegant but youthful. The peplum flare accentuates her waist while the rest of the dress fits her perfectly. I love the interplay between white and black at the top of the dress to create the designs, and the detailing is absolutely gorgeous.
The dress speaks for itself but boy, does this Fashionista know how to complement it with accessories! The earrings, the bag and the shoes all leave me speechless. Each piece holds its own without overpowering its counterpart. They provide the best day-to-night transition. The red lip, red strip on the bag and red shoes all work so well together that I am convinced that I have just found my new style icon!
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Don’t be afraid to accentuate a standard black or white outfit with a pop of color! Coordinating color in specific accessories, makeup and shoes will make all the difference to complete your ensemble, and people will definitely notice how you bring new life to a classic style.”
