It only consists of three letters but it seems like everyone has a different way of pronouncing it—my name is Ada (pronounced “ay-dah”) Chen and I’m stoked to finally join the Style Guru family at CollegeFashionista! I am a through-and-through Brooklyn native moving into my senior year at New York University as an English major with a Creative Writing track and a Media, Culture and Communications minor.
I’ve been writing since I could form the semblance of a complex and coherent sentence; writing is in my blood, it is my lifeline and I could never give it up. Fashion and style hasn’t always been at the forefront in my life. I never had any Barbie dolls and I didn’t play dress up with my mother’s clothes but as I always say, it’s better late than never getting into the game!
Living in the fashion central of the world, I draw inspiration from all the beautiful, fashionable people I encounter on a day to day basis and all the beautiful, fashionable people in my life. I don’t know how I would classify my own style but I know I definitely do not want to limit myself to one particular category in a world that needs innovation and holds endless possibilities. As someone who has regular busy 14-hour days, the most important thing when it comes to fashion is being both comfortable and confident in myself. That tends to involve a lot of high-waisted jeans, statement jackets, clean and simple not-so-basics and a lot (and I mean a lot) of black. Right now, I am nursing an obsession with my high-waisted slim mom jeans from ASOS, nylon bomber jacket from Zara and cute patterned handkerchiefs (all pictured).
When I’m not pouring you some mean latte art and being your favorite barista, you can find me buried in my newest find from the bookstore, doodling and compulsively ripping out pages in my journal, trying to cook in my under equipped but lovable kitchen or out and about on the town searching for my new favorite spot to kick back with a few good friends.
Craving the perfect cappuccino? I’ve got you. Looking for some sunny-side eggs and avocado toast? Here’s a list of my favorite bottomless brunch spots. Need something to wear for that next thing you have that your closet is under-prepared for? Hope black is appropriate for the occasion!
I hope you’ll stick around and buckle in guys; this summer is going to be a good ride.
