Hi Fashionistas/os! My name is Sonika Kohli, but most people call me Soni. Yes, it is pronounced ‘Sony’ like the Playstation. I am a rising sophomore attending Rutgers University New Brunswick. Although I am extremely indecisive and have already changed my mind about 10 times, my intended majors are art history and marketing with a minor in Spanish. This is my first semester as a CollegeFashionista intern and I could not be more excited to join the team.
I have always dreamed of pursuing a career in fashion but never saw a gateway to that industry. In an effort to follow my dreams I started my YouTube channel in 2012 and partnered with StyleHaul network. Now naturally I am a shy girl and it has taken me quite some time to warm up to the camera; however, to this day I produce fashion, beauty and lifestyle related content for my channel. YouTube is such an inviting and accessible platform for sharing ideas—if you are even the slightest bit interested, I highly recommend it.
Shortly after starting my channel, I realized how much I loved writing and the ability to write on and on about something, say a pair of jeans, for a blog that people actually took interest in. So I started a blog using Blogspot, which I write on every now and then. But I did not stop there. Instagram is another one of my all time favorite ways to contribute to the growing social media sector of the fashion industry. Not only do my posts frequently feature outfit of the days, but also foodstagrams and flatlays. Today I begin my journey with CollegeFashionista and I cannot wait to see what is ahead.
While living in a world with abundant forms of communication and advertising, I say why not take advantage of them. Personally, creating content for social media platforms is not just about the fashion. To me it is about advocating for the representation of minorities in media, entertainment, fashion etc. But more importantly, it is about promoting acceptance of all people no matter the situation. Whether it be modeling, design, acting, writing, everyone should be welcome to contribute.
So if I am so interested in fashion, then what is my personal style you ask? Honestly, I could not say if I had my entire lifetime to figure it out. I did say I was indecisive, did I not? All styles interest me and you can see me toying with them via my social media. I like to try out the trending looks first and then mingle them with staple or classic pieces. One of my favorite things to do is to go into Forever 21 with my friends and find the most outrageous item to style into something wearable. There is always something that makes you do a double-take.
