Hey Fashionistas/os! My name is Taylor Borde, and I am going into my senior year at Iowa State University, double majoring in apparel merchandising and marketing. I am also very passionate about journalism and writing, which is something I’ve gotten into the last few years. This is my first semester interning for CollegeFashionista, and I can’t wait to see what #RAD things happen this summer!
I was born and raised in Iowa, which isn’t exactly a fashion mecca. To satisfy my sartorial cravings, I subscribed to every fashion magazine under the sun, along with countless fashion and beauty blogs. A majority of my inspiration came from flipping through the pages of Vogue, W and NYLON, until I ventured outside of my small town.
Visiting New York and living in Los Angeles for a summer influenced my take on fashion and style by exposing me to the unique and artistic personalities of each city. I realized that fashion is more than current trends; it is something that connects the world, but also allows for each person’s interpretation. It is one of the most personal forms of creativity that we share with the world every time we get dressed.
I recently returned from a semester abroad in Florence, Italy. Living in a city rooted in fashion and history only deepened my interest in the individual behind the clothes. I struggled trying to define myself as a foreigner, while still blending in with the local culture. As I traveled throughout Europe, aspects of every country slowly adapted to my style.
I would say my personal style is minimal, but with a vintage flair. My interest in history is definitely reflected in my day-to-day with pieces reminiscent of times past, or from secondhand shops. I swear by neutrals. I’m always wearing at least one piece of black clothing. I make exceptions for accessories, however. They are easy to throw on, and can instantly change the feel of an outfit. Right now I’m really into denim jackets and neck scarves. I found a stash of my mom’s old scarves that I’ve been wearing constantly. I also never leave the house without my rings. I feel naked when I’m not wearing them.
There is so much diversity in the world, and style and fashion are incredible outlets to channel individuality. I hope to meet others this summer who shamelessly express themselves through fashion.
