Over the last few months, my Facebook newsfeed has been filled with articles and videos with the tagline “say no to bras”. Each article states the same thing, that women should be allowed to choose whether or not to wear a bra without feeling judged by the people around them. I fully support the no bra-revolution. Women should be able to wear, or not wear, whatever they like without worrying about what society considers appropriate. Yet, while I do enjoy going braless, I absolutely adore delicate lace bras and bustiers.
When I saw highlights from Alexander McQueen’s spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection, I was inspired to start wearing my bras and bustiers as the main components of my outfits. The collection takes classic lingerie elements such as lace, boning and beading and brings them into the bodices of cocktail dresses and gowns. The effect is incredibly soft and romantic but also strong and powerful. The models exude confidence while wearing garments that leave them rather exposed. The collection reminded me that as long as I’m comfortable in what I’m wearing, nothing should stop me from walking out my front door.
This look was built around my black and nude lace bustier that features multiple dainty laces and intricate boning. I paired it with high-waisted black shorts and a pale pink taupe cardigan to create the perfect sophisticated yet sexy look. To accessorize, I threw on a chunky gold chain necklace, gold bracelets, aviators, a color-blocked clutch and black heeled booties.
Wearing my bustier as a top made me feel incredibly confident, and it was invigorating to go out in a garment designed to be worn in more intimate settings. I now feel comfortable leaving the house either braless or with my bra out for the world to see. As long as I feel confident in what I’m wearing, nothing will get in my way.
