Fashion week doesn’t always produce the most wearable items. Even the ready-to-wear runways aren’t realistically ready to wear. But that doesn’t mean we can’t draw inspiration from them. And who doesn’t like to dress a little crazy now and then?
Drawing inspiration from Valentino’s spring 2016 couture collection, I took this opportunity to dress up a little bit. The show was full of high necklines, rich tones, oriental patterns and metallic headbands. I combined two of my favorite things to create my Valentino-esque outfit: mock necks and velvet skirts.
Even pieces like the skirt can go with a lot. Although it is more of an unusual pattern, it goes perfectly with any solid, plain colored shirt–this allows the skirt to speak for itself. The skirt is from H&M. I tucked an adorable, ribbed, mock neck, sleeveless sweater into it. Shirts like this one are so versatile for every season. Although a dark lip, like the one I’m wearing, isn’t a very summery style choice, why not step outside the box? Valentino does. And who says you can’t wear berry tones during berry season?
One of the simplest outfits to put together is a skirt and shirt. It’s easy to make casual enough for the library but easy to elevate for a date. By drawing from a high end, slightly outrageous thing, like designer couture, I brought it to a higher level. It’s the kind of outfit where you know everyone is looking at you because you’re the best looking one there.
