STYLE GURU BIO: Kate Kronstein

Hi, my name is Kate Kronstein and this year I’ll be attending Miami University in Ohio as an incoming freshman. I’m majoring in business economics and attempting to figure out what it is I’d like to do with my life. My dream is to combine business, fashion and writing. I’ll let you know how that goes… Anyways, I’m super pumped to intern at CollegeFashionista for the fall 2016 semester.

I cannot remember a time in my life when I did not love fashion. The problem was I never knew how to become involved in the world of fashion, until my junior year of high school. Starting the end of my junior year and throughout my senior year I wrote for the teen publication of the Chicago Tribune known as The Mash. My first assignment was a piece on fall fashion. It was then that I figured out how I could be involved in the world of fashion instead of just a spectator: writing. Writing is my way of expressing myself and sorting out all the chaos in my head. Combining writing with fashion, my two passions, is a match made in heaven.

When I’m in need of inspiration or simply a good day, I head to Barnes & Noble. I try not to go in with a specific book in mind; that ruins all the fun. Instead, I walk around until I find something that catches my eye. On one of these treasured adventures, I opened up the book Bonnie Cashin: Chic Is Where You Find It. Bonnie Cashin designed for Alder & Alder, Sills and Company and Coach, to name a few.

Truth be told, I had not a single clue who Cashin was until I came across this book. This book was written by Stephanie Lake who wrote with the goal of helping people see how influential Cashin has been on American fashion, specifically American sportswear. Cashin designed her clothes with the working women in mind. Bonnie Cashin is my inspiration when it comes to fashion, not only for how she dressed but for what she was. She was a working woman herself who never settled and always stuck to her gut. She found inspiration everywhere and anywhere, scribbling the words and ideas that she felt closest to on her apartment walls. As a Style Guru I hope to give you the kind of inspiration that Cashin gave me one afternoon in Barnes & Noble. In the words of Bonnie Cashin, “Chic is where you find it.”
