What’s up Fashionistas/os? My name is Brookelynn and I am so thrilled to be a Style Guru this semester.
Here’s a quick background: I have lived in Nashville, Tennessee my entire life, but I made a huge move to northern Ohio last year to attend Kent State University and major in Fashion Merchandising. Among my favorite things are chocolate almond milk, Spotify, mom jeans, going to concerts, the moon, guacamole, thrift shops, Criminal Minds and Law and Order: SVU. On top of this list, however, is my love for fashion and experimenting with individual style. I feel happiest when I am engaged in something creatively stimulating, so putting outfits together from thrifted pieces is like Christmas morning for me. Whether my outfit is totally out there or ridiculously casual, I will most likely still be sporting my oversized vintage denim jacket, a fun pair of sunnies and a backpack of some sort.
I am intrigued by the way people express themselves through clothes and the development each of us go through to find our own “style.” Every morning, each person contributes to his or her ever-changing personal brand simply by picking out what they are going to wear that day. How cool is that? And don’t even get me started on trends. I love them. I love seeing old fads come back around and observing how different people interpret and recreate them. I could go on for hours about the amazing aspects of the fashion industry and the impact it has on every single one of us, but the truth is that there is an extremely ugly side to fashion that I feel needs more attention—one of the main reasons I am so enthusiastic about one day working in the field. My dream job would be to own a sustainable formal/bridal wear company. Swoon.
As I progress through this internship, college, everyday life and eventually my career, I hope to spread the hard facts regarding the industry and open the eyes and minds to anyone I may meet. While we may not be able to individually change the world, we can make small positive impacts each and every day to work towards making this beautiful planet a better place. So try and shop secondhand whenever you can, whether it be at your local thrift store or through an app on your iPhone. You won’t regret it!
I absolutely cannot wait for the rest of this semester and for the opportunity to show off more of my own personal style and those around me at Kent State!
