STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Fashion and Function

From the past first week of college, I can already tell that people love to dress up for class here at Elon. However, one thing I’ve noticed is that despite dressing up, people still look casual and comfortable. A common trend is definitely complementing basic pieces with eclectic prints in classic shapes or accessorizing with jewelry. As Coco Chanel said, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.” But, I’m not entirely sure that’s the case anymore.

Our generation is all about accessorizing. I love how pins and patches are trending right now. For example, something simple like an old denim jacket or last year’s book bag can be super easily transformed with pins or patches.

This Fashionista paired a basic black T-shirt with a super fun printed, flowy skirt that she got at Urban Outfitters. She accessorized with a House of Harlow statement necklace and wore her favorite bracelets and watch. Then, she finished off her look with flip flops which are perfect for walking across campus in the heat.

This Fashionista’s look is super cute but is also comfortable and ready for a full day of classes. Her watch and comfortable shoes allow her to be on top her class schedule. Also, her top and skirt are easy to pair with a sweater or jacket if she gets cold. Along with the functional aspects of her outfit, she still accessorized with a pretty necklace and cool bracelets.

Dress for fashion, but also dress for function. Style is so much about comfort and self-expression. If you don’t feel comfortable in an outfit, you rarely will feel confident. Remember, confidence is key!
