We are all inevitably influenced by popular trends. Whether it’s subconscious or chosen, as Fashionistas and Fashionistos, we learn about popular trends, see photos of new styling trends and when it comes to getting dressed or buying new clothes, we take a little (sometimes a lot) of inspiration from what’s trending. The key to successfully incorporating the rising styles of fashion is to somehow make it seem like it is your own. When you get your hands on a piece that everyone is dying to buy and wear, you don’t want to make the mistake of wearing it how everyone else would. Think beyond the popular trend.
I spotted this Fashionista immediately, due to the gentle pink color of her bomber jacket and the way it complemented her coral-pink Fjallraven Kanken backpack. That wasn’t the only thing that caught my eye. I noticed how she was wearing the white sneaker trend, but chose to wear her adidas Stan Smith shoes with the green detail on the heel. When I approached her, I was able to read her shirt. It was a black graphic T-shirt with white font labeling drawings of famous artists.
I noticed all of the pieces in her outfit were inspired by popular trends—even the decision of wearing mom jeans. Besides this being a way of knowing that this Fashionista keeps up with current styles, her individuality is evident in the way she chose to coordinate each piece.
With that being said, my STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK is to definitely follow the trends you like, even if everyone else is wearing them, but allow yourself to be creative. Don’t simply wear what is trendy. Wear it how no one else would.
