The fashion trends of 2016 were definitely a high-point of the year—statement pieces and personal expression reigned this year. Vintage trends were borrowed from across decades for unique takes on tried and true styles—from ’70s flares to the oversized pieces of the ’80s to ’90s slips and chokers. The key was in details, fabrics and cuts in 2016, some of which are definitely worth carrying into the next calendar year. While there is much more in store in the forecasts for next year, there are some trends we loved this year that aren’t going away just yet.
Culottes & Wide-leg Pants
I was personally begrudging of this trend when remembering my own middle school experiences with wide-leg pants, but the 2016 revamp of the style is definitely a highlight of the year. From dress pants to jeans to bodysuits, keep wearing those flares into 2016 for that added drama in your looks. (Photo via @sarahdewald)
Faux Fur
Still holding strong, faux fur has been having a very long moment—and for good reason. From this year’s faux fur keychains to ’90s-inspired high heels to slide sandals, there are so many ways to incorporate faux fur into your everyday look. Stay warm and cute with a classic faux fur coat this coming winter. (Photo via @maddyschlosser)
Co-ords
Another longtime style trend, co-ords are still holding strong. They are inherently efficient—whether you wear them together or as separate pieces, you have many options for casual or formal outfits. Plus, as a side note, I don’t think crop tops are going anywhere for a while. (Photo via @sassofstyle)
Metallics
2016 was about statements and the metallic shoe was seen on Saint Laurent and Proenza Schouler‘s fall runway shows as an extravagant extra detail. Keep rocking those futuristic kicks into 2017. (Photo via @kirameetsworld)
Pajamawear
Leisurewear took another step in 2016—pajamas as clothes finally became a thing and not in the way people sometimes wear their pajama pants on campus. Silky button-downs deserve to stay around—not only because they’re an intriguing statement, but because they are incredibly comfortable. (Photo via @jaidabrinkley_)
Pins & Patches
DIY jackets were big this year from fraying the edges to adding patches, a personal touch was a fashion statement in 2016. These unique pieces are always a fun item to have and a good memory for down the road. (Photo via @gisele_milan)
Duster Coats
Long coats have been on-trend for a minute now, but the ’90s duster is gaining momentum at the tail end of the year now. Swap your shorter bomber jacket for one of these in 2017 and channel your best X-Files’ Dana Scully as temperatures turn. You’ll look mysterious and still be super warm. (Photo via @queenhalpal)
Wire-frame Eyewear
Delicate and lightweight, wire-frame glasses are a useful trend to own for those of us with four eyes. From the Harry Potter-esque circle frames to the throwback aviator, wire-frames are a classic choice for your next pair of eyeglasses in 2017. (Photo via @h_nos)
Chokers
One of this year’s heavyweights, the choker necklace is definitely not going anywhere with its mass popularity. Starting small with the throwback to tattoo chokers earlier in the year, the expansion into velvet, lace and chain chokers are still rampant as the year comes to close. (Photo via @alexadmendoza)
Slips
The other major trend this year is in a similar vein to pajama and leisurewear, but a little more pared down. Slip dresses and shirts were inescapable, and they’ll definitely be around throughout this winter and coming summer. Both comfortable and flattering, wear this trend around campus and in the evening through 2017. (Photo via @briannailah)
