5 Insider Tips and Secrets About Rocking This Year's Hottest Hair Color

I’ve always identified as blonde. I like having blonde hair; I think of it as a part of who I am. But every now and then I get an itch to change. It’s not uncommon to feel an impulse to change up your hairstyle. A simple cut and highlight can go a long way! But what if you want to go all the way?

Introducing: fantasy hair. Whether you’re about to dye your hair purple in your roommate’s bathroom or visit a salon, there are a few things to consider before becoming a “My Little Pony” IRL.

1—Prepare yourself. If you have naturally light or pre-lightened hair, then you’re already half way there to achieving fantasy hair. A colorist must bleach your hair in order for the color to take. This can be very a damaging and long winded process for brunettes. Dry, brittle hair and breakage is a possible outcome if you do not have your hair professionally treated and prepared for the magical experience of colored hair.

2—Upkeep. Once your locks are flowing in cotton candy hues, you have to make sure you’ve got the right stuff to keep them that way. Purple shampoo can help maintain shades of silver and lavender and prevent fading. To keep your hair soft and prevent damage from heating tools, run some argan oil through your tresses or try a leave-in product to increase softness and protection. If you’re like me and prefer to wash your hair every couple of days, you might need to have your color refreshed every few weeks. Depending on the color you choose, do some research to see the evolution of the color as it fades. Some fade more gracefully than others.

3—Fashion. This isn’t something that a lot of people take into consideration, but as a Style Guru, every time I dye my hair I consider what sweaters and lipsticks might clash with it. On the flip side, there are some new looks and styles to explore in your closet all because your hair might be blue. Stick to neutrals to let your hair shine, or embrace a an edgier look.

4—The looks. Who cares what people think, right? If you love it and you love yourself, that’s what is most important. But prepare yourself for glances and smiles on the street when you first venture out with your new ‘do. I usually have strangers stop me to gush over the color and say “I wish I could do that!” But there are also the people who think its appropriate to glare at you and shake their head. To each their own, I guess.

5—Loving it. Enjoy this time! Your hair is fantastical, totally unnatural and great. Take a ton of selfies, share your newfound wisdom on treating hair, and enjoy it while it lasts!
