STYLE ADVICE: Black is the New Black

Let’s be real, black is always in. In my personal opinion, the only way to slightly go wrong with an all black outfit would be if you wore different shades. But at that point, it’s a black and dark grey look, so still works. What makes monochromatic outfits so easy, yet so chic, is the lack of needing to match patterns and colors. Choosing one shade and simply corresponding all of the pieces makes getting dressed in the morning more efficient while still looking put together.

Whether you use all black outfits as a base layer for a cool jacket or to express how you really feel about midterms, focus on the shape. Because you are only working with one color, the most interesting parts of your outfit will come from what textures and silhouettes you work with. Skintight pieces can accentuate your figure, cutouts can break up the dark pieces, and knits can give a casual, comfortable vibe. As this Fashionista shows us, layering an oversized shirt with leggings change the shape of the body, compared to, say, a tight dress. Heeled, suede boots, and a chunky, knit scarf add more dimension, giving this outfit more interest.

Black is a color, or shade if you prefer, that looks good on everyone. Plus, as a college student I look for any way that can help me get ready faster if I have an early class. Having a variety of black clothes to choose from on these days makes my life easier. Not to mention, monochromatic looks are very simple way to pull together a chic look.
