The Romans knew what was up when they opted for the 10-month Calendar of Romulus, which consisted only of the 304 days from March-December. Back then, agriculturally speaking (which is what everything was based around) the 61 days of winter represented a nameless, useless, month-less period that no one cared enough about to count. That is, until some king came along and decided it was stupid to have a calendar that neglects one-sixth of the year. This calendar connoisseur instead based the months around the 12 lunar cycles of the year and thus January and February were born.
Despite the pinks, purples, and reds of the center most day of the month, I have always associated February with one color: gray. Perhaps this stems from the fact that the month hosts the 50 Shades of Grey movie premieres. Perhaps it stems from the fact that this month is dreary and gray (don’t quote me on this on account of my tendency to over exaggerate) literally everywhere but Florida. However, regardless of the logic behind it, I think it’s safe to say the month feels like the color gray.
That being said, Fashionistas/os across the nation are wise to take advantage of the grayness (hello it’s a great neutral that matches everything) in order to concoct some RAD outfits—especially groutfits. Generally, for us ’90s babies, the term “groutfit” (gray outfit) is associated with a not-so-chic monochromatic sweat suit. Historically, for Fashionistas/os, the term has resonated through our minds as a fashion don’t. But hey, rules are more of a suggestion anyway, right?
Both Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner have been spotted sporting groutfits recently, and as we all know—fashion follows the famous. Now that these celebs have officially approved the groutfit, 2017 will likely bring us a lot more monochromatic ensembles—much like this Fashionista.
This outfit stood out to me on account of the fact that it represents the groutfit in the absolutely chicest way possible. Though her gray focused ensemble with black intonations matches the gloomy gray weather of February in New York City, the look is sleek, chic, sophisticated, modern, and is definitely #GroutfitGoals.
The oversized gray cowl-neck sweater—a desperately important staple for chilly weather—is paired alongside warm gray leggings with a plaid pattern that adds depth to the look through shading and texture. The black suede coat with gray fur trim matches the black suede over-the-knee boots, keeping her feeling warm and looking edgy. The ensemble is finished off with simple accessories: a gray crossbody for her belongings, Kate Spade technology compatible leather bow gloves for warm hands, mirrored sunglasses to block the glare/haters, and a gold tassel y-necklace—well, just because it’s cute!
Overall, the contrast of casual and chic in this Fashionista’s monotonous gem of an outfit creates a great balance that almost makes me wish February was a few days longer. Almost.
