As noted by fashion maven, Miranda Priestly, in The Devil Wears Prada, florals in spring are not exactly “groundbreaking.” The prints and patterns of the flower variety have been around for years and are always easily found in thrift shops or even your grandma’s closet. These classics are not to be tossed aside though, with a little update you can give those flowers some new life! Here are some of my favorite tips and tricks:
Accessorize. What better way to personalize and modernize your look? Adding some layered boho bangles give the perfect youthful vibe to a faded print. Hoop earrings and floppy hats are one of my favorite pairs this season, giving a fresh take on ’90s-inspired styles with new shapes and colors.
Mix n’ Match. Matching sets are a lazy girl’s best friend. They’re basically socially acceptable pajamas, made fun and flirty for summertime. But the secret of these easy outfits was not discovered by the likes of Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe. I never fail to find a silk-lined button-up vest with matching patterned pants, elastic waistband and all, stuffed in the racks at my local thrift store. While I used to roll my eyes at these old-fashioned pairings, they are now one of my favorite finds! Tuck in the vest to the comfy-as-ever waistband and find yourself in the chicest of jumpsuits. Not feeling the full floral? Swap the vest for your favorite crop top and rock the high-waist look. The same goes for skirts as pairing them with a cinched T-shirt or jacket can give a flattering shape and a modern update!
When in doubt, step it out. Shoes can be one of the best ways to change the tone of an outfit whether it be going from day to night,or in this case, from decade to decade. A chunky wedge can bring a flirty vibe to an otherwise dull skirt or pant and can extend the lines of the outfit, not only making you taller but also keeping anything from being too baggy or frumpy. In the case of shorter frocks, a satin flat can make it fit for the workplace, while a combat boot can give more of a vintage, grunge vibe for a day in the city.
