I’m so excited to be saying hello to my fellow Fashionistas and Fashionistos at my first fashion internship here at CollegeFashionista. I’m Maya, a sophomore International Relations major at SUNY Geneseo.
Like most of my peers on this site, my interest in fashion began at a relatively young age. When I was in elementary school I used to take piles of computer paper and my RoseArt pack of markers, and lock myself in the closet of my house to draw the most colorful dresses and suits you can imagine. My interest in History and English were also prominent as I grew up, and I was rarely seen without a book in my hand.
Now, as a liberal arts student in a small town, CollegeFashionista is perfect for my regular dose of fashion inspiration and discussion. My school unfortunately had to temporarily discontinue our studio arts program due to budget cuts, so I’m thrilled to have this as a creative outlet. My inspiration frequently comes from the suburban and small town lifestyle, and my outfits are (almost) always comfortable and practical. My fashion icons include Jane Birkin, Tavi Gevinson and television characters Rayanne Graff and Ally McBeal, because their styles are all extensions of their incredibly unique personalities.
I don’t have a very concrete personal style; I lack decision making skills and as a result, my look can jump from “late for the Arctic Monkeys concert” to “late for a $40 brunch” to “late for a camping trip” in the course of a week. I lean towards neutral colors and looser clothes: baggy sweaters, shift dresses and worn-in jeans are all staples in my closet. I am an extremely frugal shopper—I frequent thrift stores and clearance racks, and will almost always choose a wardrobe staple over an eccentric piece.
I am hoping this internship broadens my interest and knowledge of fashion, and hope you follow me on my journey. I will be writing every Monday throughout the spring semester!
