“Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.” Rachel Zoe was brilliant in her choice of words; they are the words that I choose to live by everyday. If I were asked why I love fashion so much, my answer would be because fashion is the only gateway that I feel I can creatively express myself.
Despite the fact that clothes can be looked at as just being a piece of fabric or something to cover one’s body, the way one chooses to dress identifies who that person is. Someone could dress preppy, punk or even bohemian, and without saying a word they can still get the message across. My style is a little bit of a mix between bohemian and chic.
In addition to having a specific style, someone can have a special detail. My go-to fashion detail is the color back. This is for two reasons: it matches everything, and you always look skinnier. Needless to say, I can always find a way to add a little spark to my outfit to make it just right. Black leggings are always an amazing item that gets this job done.
Here is a little about where my fashion experience first started. When I was younger, I worked in a dress store. It sold primarily Bat Mitzvah, Sweet 16 and prom dresses. Girls would come into the store with something in mind, with special requests such as color and detail. However, by the time I was finished helping them and their order was placed, they would walk out with something they never thought they imagined wearing. This made me feel like my fashion influence was greatly appreciated. This job was where I learned my first real lesson in fashion: you never know if you will like something until you try it on.
Now that you know so much about my take on fashion, let me actually tell you who I am! My name is Hallie Cohen, and this is my first semester as a Style Guru. I am a sophomore at the University of Michigan majoring in Spanish. I am also looking to pursue a double minor in business and crime, justice and social change. I was born and raised on Long Island so even though I am currently living in the Michigan tundra, I have had enough experience with the cold to still be able to keep my outfits trendy while still staying warm.
Last but not least, here is a little about my outfit. I started with an extremely warm and comfy Free People sweater but kept it classy by adding a pair of black leather leggings. My boots are Aquatalia which are water resistant, made especially for the cold winter but still very much in fashion. My jacket is Andrew Mark, and it is my absolute favorite fashion item for this winter, especially because of the accented leather patches on the elbows.
