In Mona Kowalska’s recent fall 2014 ready-to-wear runway show, there were a number of looks that brought together monochromatic, darker shades and the relaxed fit of oversized coats. She combined classic sportswear materials in warm-up pants with structured wool coats for layered looks that were both unique and functional. Many of the outfits that sashayed down the runway were paired with simple, solid color booties to keep the eye focused higher. I could relate to some of the more monochromatic ensembles because my own style tends to be more focused on shades of black and gray. But Kowalska playfully incorporated a combination of textures and pops of color.
I decided to give these concepts a try with black, gray and maroon. My suede and metal booties kept with the dark color choice and brought their own texture to the outfit. The oversized wool coat had a subtle gray, checkered pattern that separated itself from my layering with another gray sweater underneath. But following Kowalska’s collection, I chose a brighter maroon scarf to add some color variation to my darker look.
This fall 2014 show gave me inspiration to add more texture to some of my favorite monochromatic combinations. Kowalska showed me ways to have fun with punchy colors and patterns that I hope to try in the future.
