STYLE GURU STYLE: '70s Surge

Over the past few seasons, the ‘70s have slowly made their way to the runway. At first it was a sprinkle of organic prints on a few dresses; however, this upcoming spring, there has been a surge of 1970s style everywhere. A number of the collections for spring 2015 have included a multiplicity of ‘70s prints, palettes, silhouettes and styling. Yves Saint Laurent’s spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection was infused with myriad color palettes, patterns and styling akin to the ‘70s mode. Many of the concepts pay homage to Yves Saint Laurent’s collection nearly four decades ago. The earth-toned palette and floral prints captured my eye with some garments containing extensive beading in sinuous patterns. Aside from the fabrication, silhouettes reflect the period with bishop or bell sleeves, A-line cuts and plunging necklines. Accessories paired with the looks include sheer black tights, platform sandals, large hats and nature-inspired jewelry pieces.

My love for excessive bead decor and extreme patterning influenced my ‘70s look on a smaller scale. Through minimal styling techniques and a focus on silhouette, color and print, I chose contemporary pieces that reference ‘70s trends. One of my favorite thrift store finds is an earth green, nature print dress with bishop sleeves and a lower neckline. Paired with my dress are black, strappy heels and a metal clasp purse worn on the shoulder. My jewelry includes organically-inspired pieces such as a floral ring and circle necklace that echoes the dress’ curvy patterning.

An avid accessory lover, a runway trend that I would like to follow more is the rise of the platform sandal in conjunction with ‘70s looks. The styling has become minimal with wide brimmed hats, simple jewelry pieces and statement platform sandals to complete the look. Slowly, the platform has been making its way to the streets, and I hope to jump on-board with this trend as it becomes a focal piece with a styled ’70s image.

Get My Look: 1. An organically printed dress. 2. A muted pair of platform sandals. 3. Nature-inspired jewelry pieces.
