When Friends was put on Netflix this month, I found myself gravitating towards ripped tights and heavy lipliner when I got dressed in the morning. It’s about time ’90s grunge made a full circle and became on-trend again. After reliving ’80s fashion in 2009, layers of black and gray are a welcome change from neons and shoulder pads. Apparently, I’m not the only one of this opinion. Cue this Fashionista who I bumped into on campus sporting a seriously awesome ’90s style outfit.
They say that everything old is new again, and the classic turtleneck-mini skirt-leather jacket combo has certainly been revitalized since Jennifer Aniston rocked the look so many years ago (if 20 years is “so many years,” that is). The new look and feel of this Fashionista’s leather jacket certainly brings the look into 2015. Grunge is a seriously intense style, and is best received if made modern. In other words, follow this Fashionista’s lead and leave some ’90s trends in the ’90s where they belong (can anyone say “destroyed denim Canadian tuxedo”??). Just a hint of the era is more than enough to make your look fashionable and interesting at the same time.
If grunge basics are still too much for you, do not fear! Only a few people have ever been born with enough grunge in their veins to make the look their signature. Take another hint from this Fashionista and trade out your high-heeled boots for a pair of flat ones. Your outfit (and your feet!) will thank you.
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Wear what you feel comfortable in. Putting too much effort into your look is exhausting and uncomfortable.”
