To most of us, fashion often seems overwhelming. Trendy styles don’t seem doable and runway styles are often out of reach because of their avant-garde shapes and outlandish clashing. For most runway shows, simplicity and restraint are cast aside. However, some designers find their ground in the basics and build off of them to create something spectacular. Givenchy pre-fall 2015 spoke to me through one of the most popular trends in high fashion: all black ensembles. They show us how minimalism can be either edgy or sophisticated. The collection of pleated dresses, boxy blouses and fierce booties inspired me to make my own Givenchy look (on a college student’s budget).
Rocking black does not have to be difficult or intimidating! I started with a long tunic that was easily taken into the winter season by layering it with a cropped pullover sweater. Then I threw on some black skinny jeans and a black felt hat to hide my second day hair. I feel most confident in my minimalistic outfits when its paired with some classic gold jewelry, so naturally I chose my favorite menswear sized watch and spiky gold necklace. No matter if the Givenchy look was pants, a skirt or a dress, they were sure to couple it with some stiletto heeled black lace-up booties. My shoe closet is lacking in the lace-up department, so I stuck with some cutout booties that are comfortable enough to run around campus all day long.
Givenchy shows us that the basics can be bold. Black is most definitely back, and now we have the tools to take these trends from the catwalk to the sidewalk.
Get My Look: 1. A tunic. 2. A cropped sweater. 3. Black booties.
