STYLE GURU STYLE: Russian Couture

I can’t say that I have much experience wearing couture. Sure, I have always longed for the day when I can debut and over the top and avant-garde gown to an upscale 21st century ball, but in my 20 years on this earth it hasn’t happened yet. Prom is as close as any of us get to the couture looks of high fashion. I also can’t say that I have a knowledge of Russian history. I know a thing or two about the Romanov’s, and everyone’s home girl Anastasia, but drawing inspiration from Russian history is something I hadn’t considered. However, designer Ulyana Sergeenko did just that. Having roots in Russia and working hard throughout her career to overcome the struggles of poverty there, she draws inspiration from the rich history for her spring 2015 couture show. I was immediately drawn to the attention to detail and the costume like, 1940s feel. Each piece transported me to a time of elegance and grace. I can’t say that there is the perfect occasion for her pieces here on campus, but I can say that her designs are more than inspirational for my future in fashion.

It just so happened that I had this blue, red and yellow number hanging in my closet. This was an item I picked up at a thrift store in Louisville almost two years ago. I knew that this wasn’t going to be a piece that got a lot of wear, but I knew that I couldn’t walk out of the store without it. When you put a dress like this on, you just know that even if you have to create a venue or an occasion to wear it, it will be worth it. Turns out, this CollegeFashionista post was just the occasion. I think the vintage feel and Madeline-esque qualities aligned this dress well with the Ulyana Sergeenko show. Instead of dressing it up in couture fashion, however, I dressed it down with some brown booties and my new (and absolute favorite) purse. Some simple accessorizing, and, of course, lipstick, was all a dress like this needed.
