There’s something really intimate about design. Through fashion you get a glimpse at a designer’s personality, mood and inspirations at the time they were making a garment. This week I caught up with fellow Fashion Design major Ashlyn Stiles to see what inspires her designs and everyday style.
Name: Ashlyn Stiles
Role: Fashion Design Student at SUNY Oneonta
CollegeFashionista: How did you get interested in fashion design?
Ashlyn Stiles: I’ve known that I wanted to be a fashion designer since I was a little girl. I started taking sewing classes in fifth grade and I’ve loved it ever since. Designing is a passion of mine and I am excited to pursue a career in it, hopefully in the bridal industry.
CF: Where do you get inspiration for your designs?
AS: A lot of my inspiration comes from the beach, more specifically the ocean. I look for fabrics that have a lot of drape and movement, kind of mimicking the way that waves flow. I also love nature and using natural colors. Other than that my inspirations come from things I see on a day-to-day basis and ideas that are just stored in my mind and creative imagination.
CF: What’s your favorite trend right now?
AS: One of my favorite things about fashion is that trends are a reoccurring cycle. My favorite trend as of right now is choker necklaces. Who knew they would make a comeback? It’s such a simple piece that can take an everyday outfit from blah to an edgy chic statement.
CF: You’re designing in Oneonta’s Student Fashion Society Club’s fashion show this spring, can you tell us a little bit about your collection?
AS: I am so excited about the upcoming spring fashion show. I am designing a beachy bridal collection consisting of satin and lace as well as neutral colored sashes. My models will wear barefoot sandals, and each will be accompanied by a groom sporting khakis, a white button down and a vest that’s the same color the brides wearing.
