If you want a unique and trendy look, but are trying to save money, say, “goodbye” to the mall and “hello” to secondhand stores. The Fashionista I found this week is sporting a casual look that she told me came mostly from thrift shops. Thrifting can be a hit or miss, but the possibility of finding a one of a kind item for a low cost makes it worth your time.
This student found the perfect denim jacket at Goodwill, a great, trendy piece for the New Orleans winter. A slightly oversized denim coat can be thrown over a sweater or flannel when the temperature is lower and worn over a floral dress on a warm spring night. You can easily find a cool, distressed denim jacket at a thrift shop for half the price of a new one. To add a little warmth to her outfit this student wore a navy cable-knit skirt. She layered a simple white crop top under the jacket to keep the look casual.
This Fashionista was also rocking some ’90s-inspired accessories. Chokers have been everywhere lately and I love her simple take on the trend with her clear choker and small heart charm. She layered another simple silver necklace on top, a combination I’ll definitely be trying. Jellies have been back and better this past year, despite their association with ’90s kids. This Fashionista’s clear jelly flats are comfortable and perfect to slip on quickly for class. As a last accessory she wore an eye-catching black, cream and gold woven purse. The fringe and mix of fabrics makes this purse a perfect statement piece to wear with a simpler outfit.
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “My favorite places to shop are thrift stores and in my mom’s closet. I love finding unique pieces that I couldn’t get at a trendy store and of course I love saving money. Trends are always coming back so it’s easy to find recycled fashions at a secondhand store.”
